Welcome to the STEAM Academy in Marble Falls ISD!
We are so excited to be in the middle of our ignaural year of the STEAM Academy in Marble Falls ISD! This year the STEAM Academy consisted of approximately 75 6th grade students and is currently located at Spicewood Elementary. Each year we plan to add another grade of students until we reach 8th grade. The goal of the STEAM Academy is to offer integrated learning of the core academics through the lens of science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. We believe that learning should be engaging and cross-curricular while focusing on real-world learning opportunities. The student's daily schedule will offers combined academic classes, art, music theater, pe, technology, Project Lead the Way, as well as a specific PBL (problem based learning) class.
For the 2019-2020 school year please see the special announcement below regarding the location of the MFISD STEAM Academy for 2019-2020 and beyond:
Over the past few months, the MFISD Curriculum & Instruction Department has been gathering data from a variety of sources regarding the various successes and challenges involving the implementation of the inaugural year of the MFISD STEAM Academy. We remain excited about the successful learning environments that exist at MFMS and at the STEAM Academy – we are fortunate in MFISD to have this situation!
However, in a transparent examination of challenges, we believe that students who choose to attend the STEAM Academy are confronted with a few obstacles including: less instructional time than their MFMS counterparts, a decrease in opportunities for full participation in the fine arts and athletics, and a deficit in some of the cultural experiences available in a comprehensive middle school. Some of these obstacles will only increase over time.
After much thought, planning, and study, MFISD has decided to move the STEAM Academy to a “School within a School” model for the 19-20 school year. Beginning with the 19-20 school year, the STEAM Academy will continue to exist, only it will be located within the campus of MFMS. This decision will allow our STEAM Academy students to participate fully in the fine arts programs as well as the athletic programs. STEAM Academy students will still have a separate area dedicated to them and separate classes with the same course offerings they experienced this year. The STEAM Academy will operate as it did this year – only at a different location.
This plan, we believe, will allow the STEAM Academy to continue to grow. We have been very appreciative of the welcome our students received at Spicewood Elementary and owe the staff at SWES much gratitude. We are also excited for the STEAM Academy’s future home at MFMS.
