Marble Falls ISD Proudly Announces Soor-el Puga as Director of Elementary Education

Superintendent Dr. Jeff Gasaway has named Soor-el Puga as the Director of Elementary Education for Marble Falls ISD. Mr. Puga will assume this role at the conclusion of the 2023-2024 school year.

During his seven-year tenure at Marble Falls ISD, Mr. Puga has served with distinction as the Director of Bilingual/ESL Programs & Migrant Services. He has spearheaded numerous initiatives, including elementary dual language campus programs, the implementation of the annual Hispanic Heritage Month event, and the establishment of the Marble Falls High School Welcome Center, which serves newcomer emergent bilingual students. Mr. Puga's commitment to promoting diversity, inclusion, and academic excellence has positively impacted students, families, and staff across the district.

Before joining Marble Falls ISD, Mr. Puga dedicated 17 years of his career to Hays CISD, where he served in various roles such as elementary campus principal, assistant principal, instructional technologist, and elementary teacher. His extensive experience also includes working with at-risk youth, community outreach and engagement, and the visual arts. Mr. Puga is a published children's book author and illustrator, and his expertise has been sought after through professional learning conferences and educational events statewide.

Mr. Puga earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Texas, a master's degree in education from Texas Tech University, and educational leadership credentials from Texas A&M University Kingsville. He is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in bilingual education at Texas A&M University Kingsville.

Active in educational associations, Mr. Puga serves on the regional board of directors for the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA) as past-president. He is also a member of the Texas Association of Bilingual Education (TABE), the Texas Association of Chicanos in Higher Education (TACHE), and serves as a national representative for the American Educational Research Association (AERA).

Yarda Leflet, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction, expressed her enthusiasm for Mr. Puga's appointment, stating, "I am excited for Soor-el Puga to serve as our Director of Elementary Education. Mr. Puga is an experienced elementary principal and a leader in elementary education, from coaching leaders to serving on the Texas Elementary Principals & Supervisors Association (TEPSA) Board of Directors. He has served the Marble Falls ISD community for many years as the Director of Bilingual/ESL Programs & Migrant Services, and I am looking forward to him impacting the education of our students in a larger capacity."
